EastEnders‘ Whitney (played by Shona McGarty) is yet to find a man who sweeps her off her feet and can start a family with.
She thought she’d found happiness with Callum (Tony Clay) but was heartbroken when he revealed he’d had an affair with Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden).
Initially, Whitney thought about going through with the wedding but had a change of heart when she got to the altar leaving fans fearing she’d never find happiness.
However, it seems the beloved EastEnders resident won’t be wallowing for too long as bosses have teased the next 18 months will throw Whitney into the spotlight and there may be hope for her love life yet.
Teasing what’s to come for Whitney following the aftermath of her disaster of a wedding, executive producer Jon Sen told press including Express.co.uk: “We often talk in the story office about Whitney and her troubled past and her history with men and her bad luck in relationships.
“Shona plays tragedy so well and Whitney is such a compelling character that she is a character you can give the really tough stories too and she plays them with such conviction and power, you err away from making her happy.
“The important thing for us with Whitney going forward, we agreed we wanted to push her to the front and centre of the show in terms of investing in that character.
“This [the wedding] story becomes the chapter in a much longer arc we have planned going forward.”
Jon went on to tease Whitney will have a pivotal role as a number of other storylines come to a head and could be set for an unexpected romance.
He explained: “Over time, over the next 18 months, she learns from everything you’re going to see coming up and then going on into Christmas and the thirty-fifth next year.”
“Maybe she will find happiness eventually, but it may take some time,” Jon concluded.
While Whitney looks for love, Ben star Max has hinted Callum could be the one who calms the vengeful Mitchell down.
Ben is yet to find love since the death of Paul Coker (Johnny Labey) so could Callum be the one?
“Callum gives a whole new dynamic to Ben that Ben needs,” Max commented.
“It’s almost like his moments will Callum drive him to stability and safety. Whether or not it lasts all the time for Ben, I think he’s always got a different thought.
“That’s the thing; he’s so sporadic, he’s so spontaneous and impulsive, something lasts for two minutes and then he moves on.
“It’s a crazy thing for Ben. Callum brings this whole new lease of life that I think Ben needs at this point. He needs to feel human again.”
Fans will have to wait and see if Callum and Ben’s romance lasts with the two set to deal with the aftermath of Hunter Owen’s (Charlie Winter) siege at the Queen Vic.
Ben is currently in hospital after he was shot – will he reunite with Callum if he survives?
EastEnders continues Thursday on BBC One at 8pm.
