How Katie Derham’s husband proposed to her on the first date
Newscaster Katie Derham has revealed how her husband John Vincent proposed to her on the first date.
The pair met at a university ball but didn’t begin dating before two years later.
In an interview with Woman&Home magazine in 2017, Katie said: “John proposed to me the night we met.
“I thought he was joking, but he claims he knew I was The One.
“We didn’t start going out, though, for another two years – but by then both of us were sure pretty quickly that we’d settle down.”
Her husband John said: “When Katie first met me at a university ball, she thought I was security!
“I was wearing a bomber jacket and was working there – I had a sound and light company – while studying.
“I noticed she had a really pathetic wristband that she’d obviously made herself, so I suggested that I’d let her in if she snogged me later! I asked her to marry me that night.”
The couple finally tied the knot in 1999 and John has described his wife as the most “lovely person” he knows.
John said: “Katie is the most authentic, lovely person I know.
“She’s also great fun to be with. I’m not sure that always comes across; it might be to do with her newscaster image.
“We were the last people to leave our wedding at 4am – there was no one else there, and we couldn’t even get a lift back to our hotel!”
Today the couple have two daughters together and live near Haywards Heath in Sussex.
Katie, who is a presenter of Radio 3’s Afternoon on 3 and Breakfast programmes, has previously presented the Hall of Fame Concert on Classic FM, and also presents the Traveller’s Tree series on Radio 4.
She also makes an occasional guest presenter appearance on Saturday Live.
In August 2015 the BBC announced that the newscaster had signed up to appear in the thirteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing.
Together with professional dancing partner Anton du Beke, she finished 4th out of 15 couples
