Love Island’s Mike Thalassitis was found dead near his home in Essex yesterday, his manager confirmed. Following the news of his death, The Sun’s Dan Wooton called the reality star a “good man” and said he wasn’t the person fans saw on the show. “Devastated to hear of the passing of Mike Thalassitis,” the journalist told his 340,000 Twitter followers. “He was a good man and this is an atrocious waste of a young life.” Dan said he had been in contact with Mike as recently as earlier this week and that he had told him his nan has died recently.
“I spoke to Mike (who loved that I would still call him Muggy) on Thursday,” he tweeted. “He was grieving the loss of his nan.
“She was 94 and he had moved in to live with her because she needed a full-time carer.
“He assured me he was fine and was excited about the launch of his shop,” Dan wrote. “There was so much in store for his future that this is truly senseless.
“Mike wasn’t the lad you saw on Love Island. He was tender and sensitive and vulnerable and desperate of true love.
“Rest in peace, mate. I will miss you.”
Mike was best known for appearing on Love Island 2017, on which he entered the villa half way through the series.
His nickname, ‘Muggy Mike’, came about after co-star Chris Hughes, 35, branded him “muggy” after they locked horns over Olivia Atwood, 27, when Mike recoupled with her.
Since news broke of Mike’s death, Chris has taken to Twitter to ask his 476,000 followers to drop the epithet.
“His name wasn’t Muggy Mike,” he tweeted. “Please stop brandishing that.
“His name was Mike Thalassitis, and every inch of my heart goes out to his family and friends. A good guy, taken far, far to soon.”
Tributes have poured in from Love Island stars, with host Caroline Flack, 39, saying: “Mike… you were a total gentleman… I won’t forget that.
“It’s so sad… you will be missed.”
Amber Davies, 22, penned: “I am in utter shock. @MikeThalassitis you were on of the most genuine guy! I just can’t believe this! You’ll be missed so much you have no idea.”(sic)
A statement from ITV said: Everyone at ITV2 and Love Island are shocked and saddened by this terrible news. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mike’s family and friends at this very sad time.
Since Love Island, Mike had appeared on Celebs Go Dating.
He split from his TOWIE star girlfriend Megan McKenna, 26, last year.
In addition to his reality TV career, he was previously a footballer, playing for clubs including Chelmsford and St Albans.
