Ziva David (played by Cote de Pablo) will be back on NCIS for the beginning of season 17, but in a blow for fans she may either leave after the season premiere or after the first few episodes of the CBS and Fox series. The NCIS showrunners have suggested she will only be back as a guest star rather than for the whole of season 17. CBS will air the premiere of NCIS season 17 on September 24, at which time we will know more about how long Ziva will be back for.
Will Ziva leave NCIS after season 17 premiere?
So far, the NCIS showrunners have only confirmed that Ziva David will return for the season 17 premiere.
In a statement, Frank Cardea and Steven Binder said: “We are thrilled to share that Cote de Pablo will guest star in the NCIS season 17 premiere this fall, as Ziva’s warning to Gibbs (Mark Harmon) unfolds.”
The use of the phrase “guest star” seems to suggest that Ziva will only be back for one episode or, at the most, a few episodes.
However, Ziva remains a beloved character for fans of NCIS and news of her return has given the CBS series, which airs on Fox in the UK, a massive boost.
As such, they may want to feature as much of Ziva in NCIS season 17 as they can.
One way they may do this is by starting the series with a two-part season premiere.
This would not be the first time that NCIS began with a season premiere that aired over two weeks.
For example, NCIS season three was a two-parter so it is possible that season 17 could follow suit.
However, fans may need to come to terms with the fact that Ziva will not be back for long.
Her surprise appearance at the end of season 16, when she appeared to Gibbs informing him that his life was in danger, was her first appearance on the show in six years.
Many were left unsure whether she was really there or merely appearing in Gibbs’ imagination, though the statement from the NCIS showrunners seems to suggest the former.
CBS and Fox have not released an episode synopsis for the first episode of NCIS season 17 yet and when they do we are sure to find out more about whether Ziva will leave after episode one.
Another possibility is that she may make a number of guest appearances in the season, spread out over a number of episodes.
This could also allow NCIS showrunners to bring Michael Weatherly back for the reunion of Ziva and Tony DiNozzo that many fans are desperate for.
According to Cheat Sheet, Weatherly wrote in a now-deleted tweet: ““Yes I believe Ziva is alive and I will always be ready to play DiNozzo when the time is right….”
However, with Weatherley’s show Bull renewed for a season four, this reunion may have to wait for another year.
