The Walking Dead spent a lot of time trying to get off the ground as producers struggled to find a network for it.

And it could be argued that the first season of the post-apocalyptic show would not have seen such success without Andrew Lincoln playing Rick Grimes.

The first season focussed solely on Rick’s journey out of the hospital after being put into a coma and going out into the world to find his wife and son.

But it has been revealed that Andrew was not the first choice for the role of Rick, and was in fact the second choice for the leader’s role.

According to, the original showrunner of The Walking Dead wanted Thomas Jane to take on the role of the Alexandria leader.

Thomas is an American actor best known for his role as Frank Castle in the 2004 film “The Punisher”.

Although he was the first pick for the show, The Walking Dead struggled to get picked up by any networks.

But years later when the zombie show got picked up by AMC Thomas was wrapped up in filming for the foreseeable future.

At the time Thomas was busy working on the HBO show “Hung” which was later cancelled after season three.

This forced AMC to take on Andrew for the show, who has now been in the role for almost ten years.

Andrew will be leaving his spot on the show in the upcoming ninth season of the show.

After rumours surfaced in May around his apparent exit, he confirmed the rumours during San Diego Comic Con earlier this month.

During his announcement speech, Andrew confessed that he will be leaving the show after a small number of episodes.

It has not yet been announced how he will leave, however, leaving Rick’s fate open.

Andrew recently spoke about his exit to Entertainment Weekly, comparing his final episodes to “releasing air”.

He explained: “It was very satisfying, the last two episodes, in particular.

“But doing the panel and having to talk to [thousands of] people in Hall H and then have all my friends hug me at the end? The s**t got real, is the truth of the matter.”

He also explained the real reason behind his exit, saying: “I have two young children, and I live in a different country, and they become less portable as they get older.

“It was that simple. It was time for me to come home.”

The Walking Dead season nine returns to AMC and FOX UK later this year.
