WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Walking Dead season nine, episode five.
The character has been the focal point of the show since the very beginning with Rick’s face was the very first one viewers were introduced to on the show.
Andrew has since spent nine seasons on the show, and it all came to an end for his character Rick last night, yet apparently there were plans to have him leave in season eight.
“There were many iterations [of Rick’s exit],” Andrew told The Hollywood Reporter.
“A lot of it was down to the good people at AMC, who just said no and they thought it would be an interesting and exciting proposition to expand rather than contract the show.
“Realistically, this decision was all about time. For me to want to do a limited number of episodes [of The Walking Dead] a year wouldn’t feel like I was doing my job properly because playing this part has been so all-encompassing.”
“I think I would get frustrated with that,” the actor continued.
“So the idea of being able to contain the story and still work just as hard and tell a different story in maybe a more expansive narrative way seemed very exciting to me.”
In Rick’s final moments on the show, he was spared by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) who called up that mysterious helicopter to pick Rick up.
“And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all.”
Andrew went on to mention the films which would be expanding upon Rick’s story.
He said: “I suppose, to be able to kind of touch upon [the wider world] in a contained story, for me, is a very exciting proposition.”
“Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story,” he concluded, teasing his future as the character.
The Walking Dead season nine continues next Sunday on AMC and next Monday at 9pm on FOX in the UK. Seasons 1-8 are available to stream on NOW TV.
